Olympique Lyon - Saint Etienne (2-1) |
French Division1, 21 December 2000 |
Stadium : Stade Gerland |
Attendance : 39019 |
Gerland stadium (Lyon-France, Thursday 21th December 2000
Referee : M.Alain Sars
Weather : 0°C
The last derby Lyon vs St.Etienne I have assisted in Gerland was on december 2000, a few days before Christmas and the winter mercato. For this gala night the stadium was sold out for two months already. Our seats (I was with my wife) were in the east stand 'tribune Jean Bouin', right in the middle with a good view on the pitch. I remember to have paid 60 euro for each ticket ... at the black market I have heard prices of around 200-300 euro!!
The match now: No time of observation between the two teams. The game has begun very fast on two sides with attacks and defensive movements. At the second corner for Lyon, Sonny Anderson opens the score, strangely alone in front of the goalkeaper Janot (4e,1-0). It was the 99th goal of the brasilian in French championship.
The John Toshack guys were playing good football but in front there was an iron defense with Deflandre, Edmilson, Müller and Delmotte. The equaliser of St.Etienne came after 70 minutes with a goal of the Brasilian striker Alemida Alex and it was only justice because the Greens have produced a top game all the match long. At this moment we have thought a draw should be deserved for the two teams. But,but...one minute before the end, Christophe Delmotte, who was a left defender, scored with a marvelous goal with his head. The show was finished: Lyon wins 2-1 and it was the 4th victory at home for the Gones.
At this period of the championship Lyon was 5th with 34 pts. and St.Etienne 13th with 27 pts. The final season 2000/01 table would be : Lyon,2nd (Nantes 1st) and St.Etienne, 16th .... relegation to Division 2!!
I finish with a short funny story. My wife Sandrine is born in St.Etienne and that is also where all her family lives. So she's a green fan. But for this match we were side to side, hand in hand, Sandrine with a green scarf and me with the Lyon’s jersey! ... but everything is all right between us ;-))
