Verdy comes from the Portuguese word verde, which means green. It has been used since the days of the club's previous incarnations as the semi-professional Yomiuri Club and the professional Verdy Kawasaki. It was chosen because green is the team color. The current name of the club was adopted when the club moved to Tokyo in 2001. 1969 is the year that Yomiuri Club was founded.
