The stadium, built for the 1974 World Cup, used to have a 54.000 capacity but now all stands have a 2nd tier which has increased the capacity to 83.000. This is reduced to 66.000 for international matches as all standing area's are converted to all seater. Borussia moved to the Westfalenstadion in 1974 as they used to play there matches in the small Stadion Rote Erde, right next to the new ground. The most famous stand is the Sudtribune which is the largest stand in Europe as it can hold 25000 fans. |
