Both stadiums will host matches for World Cup 2006. For this tournament the Westfalen Stadion was renovated strating in 2003 by building extra seats in the corners of the ground. With a maximum capacity of 83000 this is one of the biggest stadia in Europe.

Other : Schalke used to play at the Parkstadion which was built for the 1974 World Cup. In the 90's it already needed renovation and therefore Schalke decided to build a whole new and modern stadium close to the old Parkstadion. The stadium has a removable pitch and a sliding roof.

Other : Since 2006 the official name is 'Signal Iduna Park'. The stadium, built for the 1974 World Cup, used to have a 54.000 capacity but now all stands have a 2nd tier which has increased the capacity to 83.000. This is reduced to 66.000 for international matches as all standing area's are converted to all seater. Borussia moved to the Westfalenstadion in 1974 as they used to play there matches in the small Stadion Rote Erde, right next to the new ground. The most famous stand is the Sudtribune which is the largest stand in Europe as it can hold 25000 fans.
