When 96 Liverpool fans died at Hillsborough stadium in 1989, fans of both clubs rallied round in a period of unparalleled unity. A chain of blue and red club scarves was stretched for the mile or so across Stanley Park from the gates of Anfield to Goodison Park in memory of the deceased.

The new Kop Grandstand has replaced the world famous Spion Kop in 1996. The capacity of the Spion Kop was 30000 (standing) and was the biggest one-piece Tier in the world. Present capacity is 12390.
